随着新年钟声的敲响，“西气东输”正式商业供应上海也迎来了十周年纪念的日子。十年来，“西气东输”累计供应上海清洁、高效的天然气228余亿立方米。
2004年1月1日，随着西气东输进入上海的白鹤首站的阀门缓缓打开，来自新疆的天然气注入上海天然气管网，当年供气量即达到近5亿立方米，占全市供应量的50%以上。经过十年的快速发展，西气东输一线、二线年供应上海天然气量合计达30余亿立方米。迄今已累计供应228余亿立方米，相当于2800万吨标煤。
天然气在燃烧过程中的二氧化碳、氮氧化物、硫化物排放等远低于煤炭和燃油，几乎不产生粉尘，有效缓解目前上海环境负载超重的压力。正是因为包括“西气东输”在内的各大气源的安全、稳定供应，上海天然气在一次能源消费中占比由2004年的不足4%快速增长至9%左右。
